Federal Perkins Loan Program

The Federal Perkins Loan is scheduled to end on September 30, 2015.  Many of our neediest students at SUNY will be gravely affected, including EOP students, by the loss of these funds.

The Federal Perkins Loan Program was first authorized in 1958 and is the nation’s longest running student loan program. The Perkins Loan Program provides low-interest loans to assist undergraduate and graduate students with economic need in financing the cost of higher education. Perkins loans fill a critical gap that exists for many students after federal grant and Stafford loan funds are applied.

  •  In 2012-2013, 500,000 students were awarded $1 billion in Perkins loans, an average of $1,957 awarded per student.
  • New York State has the largest Perkins portfolio in the nation! Last year $105 million in Perkins loans was dispersed to 50,000 students.
  • At 29 state-operated campuses within SUNY, more than 17,000 students benefit from over $24 million in Perkins loans each year.
